{"id":16372,"date":"2024-06-02T16:41:07","date_gmt":"2024-06-02T16:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/?p=16372"},"modified":"2024-06-03T17:49:14","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T17:49:14","slug":"coping-with-an-upside-down-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/coping-with-an-upside-down-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Coping with an upside down world with coach Nick Moloney"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h3 class=\"s3\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s4\">Coping with an upside down world with coach Nick Moloney<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">As the fleet claws its way towards the end of day <\/span><span class=\"s4\">four <\/span><span class=\"s4\">in the New York<\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Vend<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00e9<\/span><span class=\"s4\">e solo transatlantic yacht race, competitors are flooding their communication and social media channels with <\/span><span class=\"s4\">expressions of <\/span><span class=\"s4\">frustration. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">I have<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> empathy for the struggling sailors<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> who are battling fatigue and exhaustion, and concern <\/span><span class=\"s4\">surrounding the weather synopsis affecting the entire North Atlantic race course<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">I have never seen anything like it. The world is upside down. I am tearing my hair out!<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s4\">commented Charlie Dalin, one of the fleet<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s best weather strategists, who is currently vying with Boris Herrmann for the race lead.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">Sailors have been yelling to the sky, shaking their fists at the wind gods, and doing their best to not let negative thoughts <\/span><span class=\"s4\">grow wings<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">About one third of the race is completed, and t<\/span><span class=\"s4\">he fleet is split into two main packs with around 2,000 nautical miles to go. The lead pack is edging its way into more consistent winds further east, while the second pack still has a way to go before experiencing similar stability in wind direction and speed. From the lead pack, Charlie Dalin also expressed, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">The weather doesn&#8217;t correspond to anything. From one file to another, it changes everything. Systems are not where they are supposed to be.<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">Scott <\/span><span class=\"s4\">is placed in the second pack battling with his class of non-foiling designed boats. He <\/span><span class=\"s4\">has just completed his daily media commitments with the race organi<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ers, expressing how gruelling and challenging the race has been and how the weather is not aligning with the forecasts. Yet, through his struggle, Scott has impressed me tremendously over the past <\/span><span class=\"s4\">four<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> days. He left Newport, RI (USA), in a great place mentally, and on his passage toward the start line, he texted me, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">I<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">m feeling ready for this<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8211; <\/span><span class=\"s4\">an expression of confidence crucial for facing such an intense personal and sporting goal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">For those of us onshore, we monitor our skippers and the fleet <\/span><span class=\"s4\">around the clock<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. On day one, Scott made it clear he was determined to give this challenge his all. He <\/span><span class=\"s4\">manoeuvred<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and changed sails in sync with the wind shifts, attacking the race with focus and energy, rewarded by a good period in the top 10 ranking, and a stint in 4th position among the 28 starters.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">From a coaching perspective, we have worked on a process known as <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2018<\/span><span class=\"s4\">knocking off the hills and filling in the valleys<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. The aim is to develop a mindset trained to re<\/span><span class=\"s4\">tain a consistent mood.<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> If you have a great few hours and pass a few boats, restrict yourself from peaking with excitement, remain calm, and take the success in stride. Conversely, if you lose places, have damage, or get caught in a windless hole, restrict the depth of your low mood response. High peaks in emotions can lead to deep lows, and the aim is to remain as emotionally level as possible.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_16356\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16356\" class=\"wp-image-16356 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.canadaoceanracing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/JGT_7580-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">Scott has a natural calmness. He has always impressed me with how unflappable he can be,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and despite the<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> last few days be<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ing<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> a huge drain on his tolerance reserves<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, he has remained incredibly composed<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. I won<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">t try to paint a perfect picture; he has been frustrated and has cursed, but he has remained focused on the task at hand. This focus has allowed him to stay positive, make strong decisions, tend to inevitable small onboard issues, and change and adjust his sails when required.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">We also need to keep in mind that the unstable weather has driven these sailors into a state of severe sleep deprivation. Securing a total of 3 hours of sleep in broken cat naps is doing well,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and e<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ven in this deteriorated state, Scott is maintaining good consistency.<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> He<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> seems to be revelling in this challenge, even bizarrely loving it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">One aspect that helps balance emotions is self-belief, which can come in many forms. Scott has trained hard for this race, resulting in a healthy level of belief. Every time he passes a competitor or makes a positive change to his setup that enhances his position or speed, this belief increases. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">Although this is a solo sailing race and the physical distance between us and these brave athletes can seem far, the messages of encouragement and support fed into Scott<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s and Canada Ocean Racing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s social media platforms provide incredible emotional support, fuel<\/span><span class=\"s4\">l<\/span><span class=\"s4\">ing motivation, reducing the feeling of loneliness, and increasing belief in oneself and the purpose. I know Scott is incredibly humbled and grateful for this support, so please <\/span><span class=\"s4\">keep these amazing messages coming<\/span><span class=\"s4\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">As Scott<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s4\">s coach, I am extremely proud of him right now<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, I am genuinely inspired by his tenacity, focus and determination, and I<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> know that <\/span><span class=\"s4\">the same <\/span><span class=\"s4\">pride and admiration are shared by our team and those in his corner.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s4\">In a world of unknowns I am excited about what the next 10 days of racing may hold for our fearless, humble and talented leader.
