A Textbook Start to the Royal Ocean Racing Club Transatlantic Race for Canada Ocean Racing<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]The <\/span>Can<\/span>a<\/span>da Ocean Racing<\/span> IMOCA 60 t<\/span>eam<\/span> c<\/span>o<\/span>–<\/span>skipper<\/span>ed by <\/span>S<\/span>cott Shawyer<\/span> and <\/span>Alan Rober<\/span>ts<\/span> and <\/span>accompanied<\/span> by onboard reporter Richard Mardens<\/span> s<\/span>tarted the <\/span>3000-mile<\/span> Transatlantic <\/span>race today at 1<\/span>4<\/span>:<\/span>10<\/span> GMT<\/span>. <\/span>The race left from<\/span> Lanzarote, <\/span>Canary Islands,<\/span> and the fleet is heading to<\/span> Gren<\/span>ada<\/span> in the <\/span>Caribbean<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span>

<\/span>The <\/span>weather <\/span>conditions for the start <\/span>were light but stable which saw the <\/span>20-boat<\/span>s in the race<\/span> get away cleanly<\/span> a<\/span>s they sailed downwind towards the first turning mark to the <\/span>s<\/span>outh of Lanzarote. <\/span>The first night of the race will see the Canadian IMOCA 60 tackle the <\/span>challenging<\/span> area<\/span>s<\/span> around the <\/span>Canary Islands<\/span>.<\/span> The chain of <\/span>volcanic<\/span> islands <\/span>creates<\/span> wind shadows and <\/span>the winds can <\/span>funnel<\/span> between the island<\/span> <\/span>into<\/span> acceleration zones making for changeable conditions on night one of the race.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”16064″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1673198949111{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Shawyer commented \u201cWe just lined up against some sailing legends on the start line – what a feeling to cross the line in such good company! <\/em><\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n

The first night could be a tricky one. The winds around the Canary Islands will see lighter patches as well as areas of acceleration. Couple this with the number of boats on the racetrack and shipping means both Alan and I must be on alert. In the first 36 hours we estimate we will get 2-5 hours of sleep each. Managing our energy in the early days of this race will be the first real challenge but I cannot wait to get into my first race onboard our IMOCA<\/em>.”<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”16065″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1673199036487{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_text]As <\/span>Scott & Alan <\/span>rounded the<\/span> turning<\/span> mark just<\/span> off<\/span> Puerto <\/span>Calero<\/span> the wind <\/span>was dropping below 10 knots at times. With the <\/span>backdrop<\/span> of the <\/span>Lanzarote mountains and afternoon<\/span> light,<\/span> the <\/span>Canadian IMOCA 60 sailed off into the sun to tackle <\/span>their first night of the race.<\/span><\/span>
